The eccentric leader of the German pirate party has been found dead and police have revealed that he had murdered another man and then killed himself after his romantic feelings were rebuked.
German Pirate Party politician Gerwald Claus Brunner has long been known as an eccentric, showing up to the Berlin parliament dressed in a bandanna like the historic namesakes of his party. The politician died over the weekend and Mr. Brunner’s body was found early Monday, the day after his party’s poor election result that saw them kicked out of the Berlin parliament.
The politician died over the weekend and Mr. Brunner’s body was found early Monday, the day after his party’s poor election result that saw them kicked out of the Berlin parliament.
His apparent suicide has now been linked to the death of another man in Berlin, a friend and former colleague who police claim Brunner murdered, reports Bild.
Authorities say the pirate party leader had romantic feelings for his victim, 29-year-old ‘Jan L’. It is reported when his advances were not reciprocated 44-year-old Brunner stalked his victim, travelled across Berlin to his house and killed him in cold blood.
Brunner may have then taken the body of Mr. L. to his home in southern Berlin, using a handcart to transport the body over 11 kilometres.
The scene at the apartment of Jan L. was described as “horrific.” Police say that the pirate party politician had severely beaten his victim, leaving stains of splattered blood across the apartment.
Though he was badly beaten, an autopsy revealed that Jan was killed ultimately by strangulation as the 6’5″ Brunner easily overpowered his much smaller victim.
The inquiry also found evidence that Jan had been dead several days previous to the discovery of his body, meaning that Brunner had waited at least a day or two before killing himself via electrocution.
The German Pirate party announced the death of Brunner on Monday after they had alerted police to the situation as Brunner had a history of making threats of suicide in the past. On June 23rd of this year Brunner even made a hint in the Berlin parliament that he was going to kill himself saying that in the next session the members would “get up and give a minute silence” for him.
The shocking murder-suicide comes the day after a historic election result in the German capital. The party of Chancellor Angela Merkel had their worst election result in Berlin in their entire history, losing over 5 per cent of the vote since 2011. The big victor in the race was the anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany party who picked up close to 15 per cent of the vote.
The result forced Ms. Merkel to admit that her migrant policy had been wrong and said she is now open to considering a new course of action ahead of the Federal elections next year.
