Three Dead After Train Derails In Northern Spain

At least three people have died and a “high number” have been injured after a train derailed in northern Spain this morning.

Local media reports that the accident happened as the local train approached the station in the town of O Porriño in Galicia.

Passengers said the train was not travelling at high speed when it crashed, according to La Voz de Galicia, however the incident was severe enough for one of the three carriages to leave the track completely and crash into a pole.

The train driver, who is of Portuguese nationality, is believed to be one of the dead.

Political parties in the region have suspended campaigning for regional elections due later this month. Galician President Alberto Núñez Feijóo tweeted: “Our sympathies for the families of the deceased. Hope for the injured. We will suspend our campaign.”

The incident comes three years after Spain’s worst ever non-terrorism related rail disaster, which saw 79 people die after a high-speed train derailed. That incident also took place in Galicia.
