NY Post: Jews No Longer Feel Safe in the West

TEL AVIV—The New York Post published an editorial on Tuesday claiming that Jews no longer feel safe in Western democratic nations.

Citing Jewish Agency figures, the Post revealed that close to 10,000 Jews have left Europe for Israel, doubling the number of European immigrants to Israel in two years.

The overwhelming majority are from France, which has been on the receiving end of a large percentage of anti-Semitic attacks. The Post included an example from last week in which a machete-wielding teen attacked a Jewish teacher in Marseilles.

Although they number less than 1 percent of France’s population, 51 percent of all hate-crime attacks in France last year targeted Jews.

“It’s reached a point where some officials have suggested that Orthodox Jews not wear a yarmulke, or skullcap, in public,” read the editorial.

“Most of the predators are Muslim extremists, but anti-Jewish rhetoric also regularly comes from the growing ultra-nationalist ranks.”

The Post listed other European countries that have witnessed a dramatic rise in anti-Semitic attacks, including Britain, Belgium, Denmark, and Sweden.

The article asserts, however, that a mass migration of Jews is unlikely, and that even in the face of Hitler’s vow to annihilate them, Jews didn’t leave Europe.

“That doesn’t change the ugly fact that — 70 years after the end of the Holocaust — Jews no longer feel safe in the streets of democratic Western nations,” concluded the editorial.
