Two people are confirmed dead as a major bushfire continues to burn in remote rural areas of South Australia. The state premier Jay Weatherill confirmed the deaths today and warned that another person is feared dead in a motor vehicle accident linked to the blaze.
The scope of the bushfire can be seen in this video:
Mr Weatherill said the third unconfirmed fatality came after a car hit a tree near Freeling, just north of the state capital Adelaide. He told media at a press conference that it was “the worst of news” to learn that two, possibly three people, had perished in the fires.
“Our priority is to make sure that list does not grow,” he said. “Our thoughts turn to those affected, those who will be working through the night to help contain this blaze.”
At least two firefighters were seriously injured with burns and nine other people were hurt in the blaze as it raced through tinder-dry grass, crops and bush, Adelaide Now reported.
Here is how one resident in an isolated rural community captured the moment the fire roared into a small township:
Firefighters are expected to continue battling the fire throughout the night.
