Zac Goldsmith is the Conservative Party candidate who will fight the 2016 London mayoral election to see who succeeds two-term mayor Boris Johnson.
Winning the four-man election with 70 per cent of the 9,227 votes were cast, the Member of Parliament for Richmond Park and North Kingston said he was “honoured”.
The son of the late industrialist, Sir Jimmy Goldsmith, Zac shares his strong euroscepticism. Although he told LBC radio this morning that he supports David Cameron’s renegotiation “at the moment” he added that he would not say it is “likely” that the Prime Minister will negotiate enough changes to convince him to vote to remain in the European Union.
He is also a staunch environmentalist and opponent of Heathrow expansion, which will likely enable to him to demonstrate a level of independence from the national Conservative government.
Zac Goldsmith’s biggest rival will be the Labour Party’s Sadiq Khan, Member of Parliament for Tooting.
UKIP candidate is the party’s culture spokesman, Peter Whittle.
Caroline Pidgeon will fight for the Liberal Democrats and Sian Berry for the Greens.
