Controversial civil rights activist and anti-gun campaigner Reverend Jesse Jackson visited fugitive Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in London yesterday.

Although it is not known what precisely was discussed, when Jackson left the building he told reporters: “800 years after the Magna Carta, freedom of the press is right and detention without charges is wrong”, reports the London Evening Standard.

Assange withdrew to the Ecuadorian embassy in Kinghtsbridge, London three years ago in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden. He had been accused of rape in the country, but claimed the charges were a fiction designed to lure him into a position where he could be extradited to the United States.

The Wikileaks founder was instrumental in one of the largest leaks of classified diplomatic and military information in history when the Australian’s website published, in concert with the UK Guardian, documents stolen from the United States.
