A bomb disposal unit has been deployed in Birmingham and homes evacuated after a man was arrested for terrorism offences and “suspicious items” were found at his home. The man, 27, was initially arrested on suspicion of “going equipped” and possession of an offensive weapon at 1:20am on Sunday morning.
Properties on Naseby Road were temporarily evacuated as the fire service and a bomb disposal unit conducted safely checks after “suspicious items” were allegedly found at his home in the Alum Rock area of the city.
The man is currently being held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act, which relates to the “commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.” Detectives from the West Midlands counter-terrorism unit will have until Tuesday to question him. The force has said the house will remain cordoned off until later today while bomb squad searches and safety checks are completed.
Few details have been disclosed to the press, but police insist there is “no immediate risk to the public” despite the call for bomb squad assistance.
Just last Tuesday, two men, both 18, were arrested in the same area of the city in dawn raids, both on suspicion of distributing a terrorist publication contrary to Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
