A lorry filled with migrants has brought traffic to a halt near the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, in Britain’s East Midlands.
The Peterborough Telegraph reports:
A lorry full of suspected illegal immigrants has been stopped on the A1 northbound near Stamford this afternoon, Tuesday June 16.
Cambridgeshire Police received information about 30 possible immigrants in the back of a French lorry, travelling north on the M11 this morning.
Officers stopped the lorry on the A1 northbound near to the junction with the B1081. About 27 people have been detained by police.
The driver of the lorry has been arrested on suspicion of facilitating immigration.
Paramedics have also attended the scene.
The A1 northbound between Stamford/Burghley House turn off and the A43 Easton On The Hill turning remains closed.
Thousands of migrants are said to be amassing in Calais, attempting to gain access to Britain. Lorry drivers are fined £2,000 per migrant entering the country in their vehicles, if they are found to have neglected their obligations to make sure their vehicles are passenger-free before entering the United Kingdom.
