Trade Unionists have commissioned a folk song demanding the sacking of their local Tory MP in Wirral West, Esther McVey. The song is part of the campaign to unseat the Minister for Employment, who is widely regarded as a rising star in parliament.
Ms McVey is defending a majority of just 2,436 and as a result the seat is one of the key targets for the Labour Party. Alec McFadden, of Wirral TUC, told the Liverpool Echo: “Wirral TUC have commissioned local socialist singer song writer Alun Parry to write and record a song to take forward the campaign to ‘sack Esther McVey’.
“This will be launched on Thursday 19th March on the action day to stop benefit sanctions. It will be a free download and we hope it gets plenty of hits and plays to get the message across to stop benefit sanctions and Sack Esther McVey.”
Ms McVey said: “I am perfectly content for the Labour Party and their union paymasters to continue their personal attacks and smears against me – because it perfectly illustrates they have absolutely nothing positive to offer my constituents or this country at the forthcoming election.”
Despite her slim majority McVey is ambitious and recently admitted on ITV’s Loose Women show that she would like to be Prime Minister. Before entering politics she was a TV presenter, starring on ‘How Do They Do That’ for BBC1.
