During his award presentation for “Best Supporting Actress” at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Ricky Gervais used his time to take some quick shots at the event’s celebrity attendees, giving TV viewers a reminder of the biting humor he deployed in his previous hosting gigs.
“It’s going well, isn’t it? Gervais opened. “Let’s not ruin it by me saying, anything, really. No one wants to see me insult any of you rich, beautiful, over-privileged celebrities, no ordinary people at home wants to see that. Cause you’re better than the ordinary people. And you know it, and they know it deep down.”
“I’m not gonna start picking on things you’ve done, some of it immoral, a lot of it illegal,” Gervais continued. “But if we’ve learned one thing it’s that famous people are above the law, as it should be. I’m not gonna get into the terrible things you’ve done to get here tonight.”
“Streep,” he deadpanned, drawing a big laugh. “Clooney. I’m not even looking at Katie Holmes.”
“Let’s get on with it before I say something insulting,” Gervais concluded.
