William Hague to Step Down as UK Foreign Secretary

Britain’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs will step down and make way for new blood in David Cameron’s last Cabinet reshuffle before the General Election next year.

The reshuffle has already seen major figures axed, and Hague’s reappointment to Leader of the House will likely be viewed as a demotion of sorts. Hague is also reportedly standing down as a Member of Parliament next year. He has served as the MP for Richmond (Yorks) since 1989.

Hague has been a long-standing friend of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who called him the “David Beckham of witty toasts” after his fawning speech earlier this year.

He has also led the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation alongside actress Angelina Jolie.

But life in Parliament hasn’t been all glamour for Hague.

In 2010 his Special Advisor Chris Myers was forced to resign after rumours circulated over an improper, homosexual relationship between the two. At the time the Foreign Secretary commented: “Christopher Myers has demonstrated commitment and political talent over the last 18 months. He is easily qualified for the job he holds. Any suggestion that his appointment was due to an improper relationship between us is utterly false, as is any suggestion that I have ever been involved in a relationship with any man”.

The Foreign Secretary has also admitted to drinking up to 14 pints of beer a day in his youth – a claim that has gained him notoriety amongst young Conservative activists.
