A Scottish charity has branded author JK Rowling a “bitch” after she donated £1 million to the campaign for a ‘no’ vote in the forthcoming referendum on Scottish independence.
The Dignity Project, who carry out work to improve the lives of children in Africa, tweeted yesterday: “What a #bitch after we gave her shelter in our city when she was a single mum” and then linked to the story.
The charity is claiming its account was hacked, but it has still been referred to the Scottish Charity Regulator, who are investigating the tweet.

Green Scottish parliamentarian Patrick Harvey, who supports independence, was quick to condemn the tweet. “A comment like that is a disgrace to the Yes cause, and to the cause of social justice,” he said.
The charity has now written on its website: “The Dignity Project has had its Twitter account hacked. We are not responsible for any tweets that have been sent.
“As a charity we do not take any political stance and our opinion is people are free to donate to whoever they choose.”
Rowling, famous for her Harry Potter books, was a struggling single mother before her books brought her fame and fortune.
She has previously donated over £10 million to multiple sclerosis charities.
