Actor Matthew McConaughey is urging people to stay at home in a new coronavirus public service announcement in which the Oscar-winning H0llywood star pays tribute to healthcare professionals currently battling the pandemic.
The Interstellar actor posted the PSA to his official Instagram account on Tuesday. McConaughey begins his narration by calling the fight against coronavirus a “war.”
“We are at war with a virus, and healthcare troops and first responders are on the frontline fighting it every day,” he says. “Staying home is not a retreat. It’s the most brave and aggressive weapon we have against this enemy. ‘Cause when we do stay at home, we help prevent overwhelming our hospitals while buying time for our scientists to find the vaccine.”
“And that is how we beat it.”
In an interview with the Associated Press, McConaughey, 50, revealed that he is living in his longtime hometown of Austin, Texas, with his wife, three children and his mother, whom he moved out of her assisted living facility to join them.
The actor said that none of his Hollywood projects has been affected by the industry shutdown, and that he is keeping busy with a new book project and teaching at the University of Texas.
The Instagram video is the latest cornovirus-themed dispatch from McConaughey. In an earlier video, the actor called for national unity to win the battle against the illness — all delivered in his signature loopy drawl.
“We’re all more dependent on each other than we ever have been. But we have an enemy in coronavirus that is faceless, that is raceless, sexless, non-denominational, and bipartisan,” he said. “And it’s an enemy that we all agree we’re going to beat. We wanna beat and and we’re gonna beat ’em.”
In another video, the Hollywood star urged people to avoid panicking.
“We gotta buy more time for the people on the frontlines trying to contain this virus,” Matthew McConaughey said. “We gotta buy more time for the scientists who are gonna find us a vaccine for the virus. The best way to do that, the best way for us to buy more time right now, is for you and I, if we can, to stay at home.”
