Late Show host Stephen Colbert bemoaned the coronavirus epidemic on Wednesday, reminiscing on a time just a month ago when he was “looking forward to impeaching” President Donald Trump.
Colbert made the comments on his nightly monologue as the Trump administration steps up its efforts against the coronavirus outbreak, which includes a complete travel ban from Europe.
“A few months ago was great, it was the holidays, I was drunk on eggnog, I was watching Cheer, I was falling in love with Baby Yoda,” Stephen Colbert said. “I was looking forward… I was looking forward to impeaching the president, remember that feeling? We’re going to get you, Trump! John Bolton is going to testify and Republicans are going to do the right thing!”
Trump was eventually acquitted by Republicans in the Senate, who with the exception of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), declined to call witnesses for a possible trial and found him not guilty of the first two articles of impeachment.
As is always the case, the Late Show audience could be heard laughing and clapping enthusiastically. However, from next week, all late-night comedy shows including Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee will all be taped without a studio audience due to fears of contagion.
“2020 has done the impossible… and made me nostalgic for 2019,” Colbert added.
