Borat director and Seinfeld writer Larry Charles singled out the media for what he sees as their complicity in ensuring that Bernie Sanders fails to win the Democratic party’s nomination for president.
Charles lashed out at the news media following Tuesday’s primary elections that saw Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) fare poorly against rival Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) who continued his come-from-behind winning streak by taking such coveted states as Michigan, Missouri, and Mississippi.
Sanders’ sudden loss of momentum has sparked speculation that Democratic party leaders rigged the primary in favor of Biden, fearing that the socialist candidate would win the nomination but ultimately lose to President Donald Trump in November. Political figures ranging from President Trump to Marianne Williamson to Dr. Jill Stein have all stated or suggested that the DNC slanted the primaries against Sanders.
Sanders himself has blamed the mainstream news media for turning their guns on him as his campaign gained steam. NPR ran a story earlier this month titled “How Russia Is Trying To Boost Bernie Sanders’ Campaign,” while MSNBC anchors have regularly vilified the candidate, with Hardball host Chris Matthews comparing the candidate’s popularity to the Nazis invading France.
In a recent press conference in Vermont, Sanders said, “We’re taking on the corporate media which has clearly attacked our campaign.”
Larry Charles echoed that sentiment in a tweet on Wednesday. “There will be many post-mortems on the @BernieSanders campaign by the media but they will conveniently not implicate themselves,” he wrote.
The Hollywood filmmaker also called Biden a “mediocre political hack.”
Comedian-actress Sarah Silverman also voiced her continued support for Sanders, promoting him as a write-in candidate.
Sanders said at a press conference on Wednesday that he won’t be ending his campaign despite media pressure to do so.
“Today I say to the Democratic establishment, in order to win in the future, you need to win the voters who represent the future of our country, and you must speak to the issues of concern to them,” he said. “You cannot simply be satisfied by winning the votes of people who are older.”
“While our campaign has won the ideological debate, we are losing the debate over electability,” Sanders said, adding that he is looking forward to Sunday’s debate with Biden.
