Purported footage of Jeopardy! champion James Holzhauer’s defeat following his epic 32-day winning streak is making the rounds on social media.
Video of what appears to be a clip of Monday’s edition of the long-running game show depicts the professional gambler falling short of breaking all-time winner Ken Jennings’ record. Jennings holds the title of winning 74 consecutive games in 2004, ranking in a whopping $2.5 million. The roughly 60-second clip shows Holzhauer losing to contestant Emma Boettcher.
Holzhauer and Boettcher are seen correctly answering the question: “Who is Kit Marlowe?” — the 16th-century English playwright. However, Holzhauer bet just $1,399, boosting his total from $23,400 to $24,799, while Boettcher wagered $20,201, landing her at $46,801. The audience is then heard letting out an audible gasp as veteran host Alex Trebek appears equally surprised.
“Oh gosh! What a payday,” says Trebek. “What a game! Oh my gosh!”
In a show of good sportsmanship, Holzhauer is seen walking over to give Boettcher a high five and congratulates her on the victory.
The shocking development comes one day after Holzhauer revealed that his daughter has grown none too fond of her father’s amazing success.
“My kid cried about the possibility of her dad losing, so I told her we could have a party the day after it inevitably happens,” he tweeted Sunday. “Now she cries when I win.”
Sony Pictures Television has yet to issue a statement regarding the outcome of the soon-to-be-aired episode.
