A documentary film about the late Fox News founder and Chairman Roger Ailes earned a meager $18,833 in its opening weekend, according to ComScore data first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The film, Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes, was a critical examination of the powerful Fox News chief, whose career was prematurely brought to an end after multiple allegations of sexual harassment.
Ailes died in May 2017, just ten months after he departed the company as a result of the allegations, with the likes of former fox news hosts Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson accusing him of making unwanted advances, claims Ailes denied.
However, the documentary’s release this weekend proved underwhelming, after it grossed $18,833 from the 15 theaters it was released, an average of just $1,256 a theater.
The film’s lack of success comes despite relatively positive reviews from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus concluding that the film “offers an overview of the media mogul’s rise and fall that proves as engrossing as it is deeply disturbing.”
Divide and Conquer is not the only film examining Ailes’s career, with filmmaker Jay Roach currently producing a still-to-be-named biopic about the Fox News founder featuring A-list star like John Lithgow, Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, and Charlize Theron.
Meanwhile, Oscar-winner Russell Crowe will also portray Ailes in Showtime’s adaptation of Gabriel Sherman’s book, The Loudest Voice in the Room, which debuted at #9 on The New York Times Bestseller list.
