Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo called out Porter magazine for failing to include more people of color for its annual “Women in Television” issue during a panel discussion organized by the outlet.
“This day has been incredible, and there’s a ton of women in the room,” said Ellen Pompeo, who was joined by actresses Emma Roberts, Gina Rodriquez, and Gabrielle Union.
“But, I don’t see enough color. And I didn’t see enough color when I walked in the room today.”
Further into the panel discussion, the Pompeo recalled a discussion with a Hollywood director in which she suggested the production crew resembled the “world that I walk around in every day. I think it’s up to all productions to make sure that your crew looks like the world we see.”
“As caucasian people, it’s our job, it’s our task, it’s our responsibility to make sure we speak up in every single room we walk into,” she continued. “It’s our job because we created the problem.”
Pompeo continued to slam Hollywood “executives and the studio people, all the studio heads,” and said “all the people who are deciding the budgets and making the decisions are all older white men. They’re the ones who live in Bel Air and Beverly Hill in the big houses. They’re the ones who are really getting rich off the content.”
“If we talk about Grey’s Anatomy and who’s profited from it, it’s Disney, the corporation, and the shareholders,” Pompeo said of the Shonda Rhimes-created ABC medical drama she’s starred on for nearly two decades.
“F*ck creatively fulfilling,” Pompeo said, “give me my money.”
Union echoed Pompeo’s sentiment, saying, “F*ck your award. Pay me.”
