Former Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon said that a “blue wave of Democrats” in the 2018 midterms “could make history” in a get out the vote video for MTV News.
MTV launched its first-ever midterm campaign “+1 The Vote” to urge young voters to participate in the 2018 midterms. MTV will also launch wrap up the November midterm election coverage with an “Election Afterparty” set for the night of Tuesday, November 6. MTV will also air new Spanish-language public service announcements encouraging young people to register and vote and will launch an interactive election map profiling young candidates and activists across the country.
As part of the campaign, MTV released a video with former Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon, in which Rippon urged young Americans to vote in the November midterms.
Rippon said that the midterms could be “just as, if not, more important than the one in 2016.”
The figure skater said that midterms allow for Americans to “approve of,” or “clap back at” the lawmakers currently “running things.”
Rippon contended that Republican want to maintain their majorities in the House and the Senate so that they can pass laws that “the president tweets about, or cares about.”
The video then displays several Donald Trump tweets about making trade deals more fair for American industry, securing America’s borders with a wall, and touting the vibrant economy Americans have experienced under President Donald Trump.
Rippon said that if Democrats manage to gain 24 seats in the House or net-two seats in the Senate, then they can block Republican bills and shoot down Supreme Court Justice nominees such as Brett Kavanaugh.
“This potential blue wave of Democrats could make history,” Rippon said.
Rippon said that a record-setting number of women are running for the House, and that the House could have their first Muslim woman in the House, and that three states could elect their first black governors.
Rippon then said that if “we don’t show up” and the people who represent us “won’t truly represent America.”
