Left-wing comedian Chelsea Handler began filming on her new Netflix documentary on “white privilege,” asking her fans for ideas on the kind of issues they want her to explore.
“Tonight I start shooting my documentary for #netflix on white privilege,” Handler wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. “Starting with my own privilege and my own whiteness. To learn more about what it’s like to be a person who isn’t white in this country. Please message me your questions on the topic and I will incorporate.”
Many of her fans obliged to her request, asking for insights into who could best help white people to understand their privilege and the perspective of black and brown law enforcement officials.
Chelsea Handler first announced the production of the said documentary in August, telling BuzzFeed in an interview that it would be “very funny.”
“I intend for it to be very funny and I intend to hang myself out to dry,” she said of the show. “I’m a perfect example of the American dream, if you’re white and borderline pretty.”
“Obama was elected and I was under the notion [that] racism is over in this country,” she continued. “We’ve got a black president, this is going to be awesome. The backlash from having a black president and watching this racism … is disgusting.”
Handler’s latest Netflix project comes nearly a year after the streaming giant canceled her talk show Chelsea after just two seasons amid largely unfavorable reviews. Following the cancellation, Handler pledged to focus more on political activism while becoming a more “engaged citizen” that has mainly involved resisting the policies of President Donald Trump, who she has described as a “domestic enemy.”
It is also not the first time that Netflix has produced content focused on questions of race. In 2017, the service released an original comedy-drama television series Dear White People, that follows the lives and challenges faced by several black college students at an Ivy League university in modern America.
