Comedienne Wanda Sykes has announced an upcoming comedy special on streaming giant Netflix after criticizing the service over how much it offered to pay her before.
Only a few months ago, Sykes slammed Netflix for offering her even less than fellow comedienne Mo’Nique for a special. Sykes accused the streaming service of gender and color bias after learning that Mo’Nique had been offered $500,000 for a special while other comedians like Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle were offered contracts in the millions, PageSix reported.
Mo’Nique had tweeted about her Netflix offer prompting Sykes to reply, “Netflix offered me less than half of your $500k. I was offended but found another home. #EPIX.”
But now, after the publicity about Netflix’s low-ball offers, Sykes is announcing a new hour-long special to debut on the streamer sometime next year, PageSix reported.
Sykes has several other comedy specials already to her credit and also was nominated for a 2017 and 2018 Emmy Award for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her work on the ABC series Black-ish.
Aside from her onscreen work, Sykes has been a principal writer on such series as The Chris Rock Show, The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show, and Last Comic Standing. She was also a producer for ABC’s aborted hit sitcom Rosanne.
A regular critic of President Donald Trump, Wanda Sykes was among the many Hollywood figures to take part in the “People’s State of the Union,” a public rally in January that served as counter-program to President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address.
Sykes was infamously booed off stage in November 2016 after launching into a rant trashing President Trump.
