Actor George Clooney and writer Matt Charman are developing a limited Netflix series on the Watergate scandal that engulfed former President Richard Nixon.
Bridge of Spies writer Charman has teamed up with Clooney and his production company Smokehouse Pictures to develop the series for Netflix, according to Deadline.
The eight-episode series, titled Watergate, will reportedly focus on different individuals involved in the scandal, including former Attorney General John Mitchell and Nixon attorney John Ehrlichman.
The scandal began in 1972 following the break-in of five men at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate hotel in Washington, D.C, which following his attempts to cover it up, ultimately led to President Nixon’s resignation.
Netflix has so far declined to comment on the project.
The series would be another foray into television for Clooney, with his company Smokehouse Productions also developing an adaptation of Joseph Heller’s book Catch-22 in which he will both star and direct.
The news comes just before the release of another political related drama The Post, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. The film focuses on how editors at The Washington Post and The New York Times managed the publication of the Pentagon Papers regarding America’s involvement in The Vietnam War.
Last month, the USA Network also announced the development of a series about the career of former President Ronald Reagan, which will be executive produced by Reagan’s daughter, Patti Davis.
