Actress, comedian, and former Bernie Sanders supporter Sarah Silverman says she “fell in love” with Donald Trump voters while traveling the country to work on her new Hulu television series, I Love You, America.
In a conversation with New York Magazine contributor Frank Rich at Vulture Fest Tuesday, Silverman said she was able to find common ground with Trump voters when she met with them one-on-one. Silverman’s new Hulu series sees the comedian traveling across the country to meet people with different political views.
“When you’re one-on-one with someone who doesn’t agree with you, or whose ideology is different than yours, when you’re face to face, your porcupine needles go down,” Silverman said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “The surprise was… I fell in love with them. I had a great time with them and I felt comfortable.”
She went on:
“I’m trying to be open. I’m finding if I do engage with someone who is angry at me, or angry and I’m a place where they can put that anger… it’s almost always a good experience, because more than anything, all of us what we have in common is, we want to feel seen. We want to feel like we exist. We really should — all of us — work on not getting our self-esteem from outside forces, but it is so much when somebody just sees you. It’s just like, everything melts away. We just all just human out again.”
The comments appear to be a stark departure for Silverman, who campaigned hard for Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) in the Democratic presidential primary before going on to back Hillary Clinton in the 2016 general election.
Shortly after the election, Silverman described the environment in America as being similar to the Great Depression. In February, the comedian suggested that the U.S. military could help overthrow Trump.
Silverman has also previously mocked Christians and conservative voters, as she did most recently in May with a promo for her latest Netflix comedy special.
Despite her newfound appreciation for Trump’s voters, Silverman still had strong words for the president himself.
“We’re waiting for him to hit bottom,” she told Rich, according to THR. “There’s no bottom. It’s bottomless.”
