After releasing a brief teaser earlier this year, Netflix has released the first full trailer for its upcoming TV series Dear White People, based on the 2014 feature film of the same name.
Dear White People is the name of the radio show hosted by sophomore Samantha White (Logan Browning) at the fictional Ivy League college Winchester University. The film follows White and a diverse groups of students as they deal with discrimination and racism at the predominantly white school.
The trailer kicks off with a “trigger warning,” and a quote apparently taken from Variety: “The following program is meant for both white and black audiences, and every other color imaginable.”
The show promises a heavy dose of race-based humor, with lines like: “Having a black vibrator does not count as an interracial relationship.”
Meanwhile, a man calls into White’s radio show to say that “we need to come together at times like this.”
“When are you gonna wake up to your white privilege, man?” White asks him, before learning that the caller is black.
The film version of Dear White People was a breakout hit at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014, picking up the special jury award for breakthrough talent. Writer-director Justin Simien is back to produce the TV series, and reportedly directed several episodes.
The series stars Browning, Antionette Robertson, John Patrick Amedori, Wyatt Nash, Marque Richardson and Jeremy Tardy. Brandon P Bell reprises his role as Troy Fairbanks from the film.
The series hits the streaming service on April 28. Watch the full trailer above.
