“Knowing is good. But knowing everything is better.”
Tom Hanks is the Steve Jobs-like CEO of tech company The Circle in the first trailer for the film adaptation of Dave Eggers’ novel released earlier this week.
Everything is going swimmingly at The Circle, with Hanks’s enigmatic character Bailey (sporting a very Jobsian sweater) vowing that there isn’t a problem that the tech company cannot solve, including the end of hunger and disease. But the company’s latest invention, a tiny portable camera called the SeeChange, threatens to destroy what little privacy citizens have left in the digital age.
Emma Watson co-stars as Mae Holland, who in the trailer goes for an interview at the Google-like tech company.
“You’re most scared of?” the interviewer asks.
“Unfulfilled potential,” Holland replies.
The Circle is directed by James Ponsoldt (The End of the Tour) and also stars Karen Gillan, John Boyega, Bill Paxton, Patton Oswalt and Ellen Wong.
The film is in theaters April 28, 2017.
