Jon Stewart trashed Donald Trump during Bob Woodruff’s 10th annual Stand Up for Heroes comedy fundraiser at the Theater at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night.
“To be here tonight with you guys, my heroes, on the eve of the last American election is so exciting,” Stewart began his politically-charged stand-up routine at the event, held to raise money for programs meant to benefit American servicemembers and their families.
The former late-night funnyman said he thought the “election was over” after the release of a leaked tapped of Trump making lewd remarks about women in a conversation in 2005 with former Access Hollywood anchor Billy Bush.
“Usually that is the signifier that we don’t have to pay attention anymore,” Stewart said.
The former Daily Show host was among many stars who took the stage at the annual veterans’ charity event, but according to reports, Stewart was the only one to get overtly political with his routine.
Comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Louis C.K., who have been critical of Trump in the past, both delivered non-political performances, according to Deadline. Rocker Bruce Springsteen, who has called Trump a “moron” and a “tragedy” to American democracy, performed a four-song acoustic set and reportedly never mentioned the Republican presidential candidate.
But Stewart dedicated most of his set to slamming Trump.
“Rigged?” he said referencing Trump’s refrain that the media and political elites are rigging the election to favor Democrat Hillary Clinton. “You live in a tower with your name on it in gold. How much better would you be if The Man wasn’t keeping you down?”
Saving some scathing material for the Democratic presidential nominee, Stewart said then there’s “poor, sweet, dearest Hillary.”
“This is in-f*cking-sane! We were a beautiful, great country and now this,” he added, referring to the FBI probe into Anthony Weiner and Clinton’s emails. “Honestly, the first woman running for president and she’s taken down by Bush and Weiner? That’s just bad writing.”
“To have another guy’s d*ck keep her from being president? Hillary Clinton is literally being c*ckblocked,” Stewart joked.
Finishing his set, Stewart pulled out a piece of paper and read tweets from a 2013 Twitter war of words he had engaged in with Trump, in which Stewart called Trump “F*ckface Von Clownstick.”
“Vote wisely this November 8,” he concluded.
