La La Land blew away the Venice Film Festival on its opening night Tuesday.
The third film from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress struggling to make it in Los Angeles.
Glowing reviews quickly poured in after the film’s screening Tuesday night, with the Hollywood Reporter‘s Todd McCarthy calling it a “welcome gift of vintage goods in a dazzling new package.”
La La Land pairs Gosling and Stone together for the third time, after 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love and 2013’s Gangster Squad.
The film will also bow at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before opening wide on December 16.
