Seth Meyers used Tuesday night’s episode of Late Night to scold and mock diehard Bernie Sanders supporters, who have protested against the coronation of Hillary Clinton as the Democratic presidential nominee at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this week.
In a new segment called “HEY!” Meyers said “I know you’re ‘Bernie or Bust’ but the results are in. Bust won. We don’t have time for this.”
Aiming his attacks at both the GOP’s presidential nominee Donald Trump and at Sanders’s most fervent supporters, Meyers said “We’re on the cusp of electing a racist demagogue, and that never ends well.”
“I don’t know which class you ditched to go to those Bernie rallies, but I have a feeling it was history,” the Late Night host said.
Meyers also took time to dispel the popular notion that million of Americans won’t actually vote for a former reality TV star as president of the United States in November.
He told Sanders supporters to “stop crying” because we’re not putting out the burning house with their preferred “hose.”
“You know how you have that crazy uncle you only see at Thanksgiving?” Meyers asked, “This country is 48% crazy uncles, and it’s about to be Thanksgiving all day, every day.”
In the segment, Meyers also included footage of a Sanders supporter with tape over her mouth, ostensibly to symbolize that she has been silenced by the DNC and the Clinton campaign.
Meyers mocked her, and by extension, invited the rest of America to do so as well: “If you’re going to put tape over your mouth to symbolize that you are being silenced, don’t agree to do an interview! One or the other! Tape or talking!”
Meyers and Trump have feuded publicly for years. He relentlessly mocked Trump’s presidential ambitions in 2011 at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“Donald Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, because I just assumed that he was running as a joke,” Meyers quipped.
A few years later, Trump returned fire and blasted Meyers for being named to host the 2014 Emmys.
“That Seth Meyers is hosting the Emmy Awards is a total joke,” Trump tweeted at the time. “He is very awkward with almost no talent. Marbles in his mouth!”
Last month, Meyers officially banned Trump from Late Night.
Meyers wasn’t the only one to humiliate Sanders supporters for their enthusiasm during the convention. On the first day of the proceedings, comedian Sarah Silverman also admonished Sanders holdouts during her speech.
“Can I just say, to the Bernie or bust people, you’re being ridiculous,” Silverman told off the crowd, leading to an eruption of jeers in the hall. The moment was made all the more odd by the fact that Silverman was one of Sanders’s most ardent supporters during the Democratic primary, at one point introducing him at a rally as a candidate who was “not for sale.”
