Rapper and social justice activist Chuck D believes Donald Trump is uninformed on the subject of race relations in America and sounds “stupid” when he talks about the Black Lives Matter movement.
“I’m a musician, so I can say things like he’s stupid and this convention is stupid for having him, how about that?” Chuck D said during an interview on CNN Tuesday during the second day of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
The co-founder of the rap group Public Enemy said Trump is “out of his mind.”
“How could somebody look at Donald Trump and not come up with the words S-T-U-P-I-D? It’s out of the bizarro world,” Chuck D said of the Republican presidential nominee.
Chuck D joined forces earlier this year with Rage Against the Machine guitarist and political activist Tom Morello and formed the politically-charged supergroup Prophets of Rage.
The group has been outspoken about contemporary politics in recent months, and planned to host pop-up concerts at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.
Morello said of Trump last month that “when it comes to race relations, he’s like an old-school segregationist.”
Chuck D echoed his bandmate by saying that Trump and his supporters are simply wrong when it comes to understanding the meaning and purpose of Black Lives Matter.
“When they say ‘Blue Lives Matter,’ yes, they’ve always mattered,” Chuck D said. “It’s like, ‘Duh, yes, that’s the authority.’ Everybody matters. For the longest period of time, black lives seemingly didn’t matter.”
Chuck D added: “Thirty years ago, the Rev. Jesse Jackson talked about the economic divide, the education divide, the divide on enforcement, the divide on the environment. They’ve widened. There’s been anger by youth who have grown into adults over the last 30 years.”
