Singer Madonna is being blasted on social media for the way she chose to mourn the victims in the deadly terror attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, which resulted in 49 people being murdered and another 53 injured by a Muslim man who reportedly declared loyalty to the Islamic State.
The Express Yourself singer first posted a tweet on Sunday featuring a photo of two men touching tongues, with a caption that read, “Love is love. Stop hate crimes. Any form of terrorism is a form of Hate!”
A few hours later, Madonna posted another tweet showing herself French kissing Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.
Before long, Madonna was being bombarded by messages from Twitter users airing their displeasure at the Material Girl singer’s messaging choices.
“Are you serious right now?” one user tweeted directly in response to Madonna. “This isn’t about you and your fake ass kiss for publicity.”
Another user suggested that the 57-year-old singer “log out” of Twitter.
Other users denounced Madonna for using the deadly terror attack in Orlando to buttress her own celebrity status, pointing out that she’s not a lesbian, and kissing Brittany Spears was a publicity stunt.
Madonna also took to Instagram and posted another image of herself with a message to the victims and the families of Sunday’s massacre.
“You cannot use the name of God or religion to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate,” said the caption. “What has happened in Orlando is devastating. My heart goes out to all the victims of the shooting and to their families. Stop hate crimes!”
