During the May 23 airing of Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show, host Larry Wilmore narrated a skit intimating that Donald Trump’s pro-gun positions are racist.
On the one hand, the skit suggests Trump views all blacks as gang members, and on the other, it suggests that Trump supporters own guns to protect themselves “from the blacks.”
In the skit, an actor playing Trump reacts to Wilmore’s reference to “the black market” by saying, “Speaking of the black market, I’d like to introduce the Trump 9mm for the blacks.” A model in a red dress holds the handgun for the camera as the actor playing Trump says, “It’s perfect for holding sideways and lightweight enough to holster in saggy jeans. It’s beautiful.”
Wilmore reacts by saying, “That is wrong on so many levels,” adding, “That’s not even what ‘the black market’ means.”
The actor playing Trump then points to a different gun held by another model in a red dress and states, “Introducing the Trump assault rifle.” Wilmore asks, “What is that one for?” to which the actor playing Trump responds, “Come on, Larry. Americans–we all know–they need something to protect them from the blacks.”
Wilmore looks at the actor playing Trump and says, “You are a horrible monster.”
The Nightly Show skit, like much of Hollywood’s anti-gun propaganda, overlooks the rise in concealed carry among blacks and the growing interest in owning guns for self-defense, regardless of skin color. It overlooks the fact that the stage on which Donald Trump stood when addressing the NRA Leadership Forum on Friday is the very stage on which Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. stood to urge citizens to acquire guns so they can protect themselves before calling 911.
Trump is white, Clarke is black, yet their message is the same.
