Tom Hanks is back as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon in the first trailer for the latest Dan Brown adaptation, Inferno.
When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he must team up with Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) to stop a mysterious, deadly plague from destroying humanity. The key apparently lies in Dante’s classic literary masterpiece from which the film takes its title.
“There’s a switch. If you throw it, half the people on Earth will die,” an ominous voice warns in the trailer. “But if you don’t, in a hundred years, the human race will be extinct.”
Inferno marks the third time Hanks will play Langdon; he previously played him in 2006’s The Da Vinci Code and in 2009’s Angels and Demons.
Ron Howard, who directed both previous installments, returns to direct Inferno off of a screenplay from David Koepp (Angels and Demons, Jurassic Park).
Ben Foster, Irrfan Khan and Omar Sy co-star.
Inferno is in theaters October 28.
