Bruce Jenner published a blog Friday scolding lawmakers in several states for passing laws that are “bad for the LGBT community” and the “attempt to make it illegal for transgender people to use public bathrooms that match the gender they live every day.”
“In North Carolina, the governor signed a law that, among other things, forces transgender people to use restrooms that don’t match the gender they live every day,” Jenner wrote in the blog post:
Mississippi recently passed a broad anti-LGBT bill which also includes language that would allow any business or employer to force transgender people into the wrong restroom, putting their safety at risk. New bills targeting LGBT people are now being debated in Tennessee and South Carolina, and on the horizon in Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, and Washington state.
“Most of these bills attempt to make it illegal for transgender people to use public bathrooms that match the gender they live every day,” Jenner wrote. “Using the restroom is something we all need to do, but these so-called “bathroom bills” are designed to make it difficult, if not impossible, for transgender people to simply go about their daily lives.”
Jenner was mentioned Thursday during a town hall interview on NBC’s Today show when Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was asked “if Caitlyn Jenner were to walk into Trump Tower and wanted to use the bathroom, you would be fine with her using any bather she chooses?”
“That is correct,” Trump responded. “North Carolina did something. It was very strong. And they’re paying a big price. And there’s a lot of problems.”
Last month, Jenner stopped short of endorsing Trump, saying that, “I think he would be very good for women’s issues.”
“North Carolina, what they’re going through with all the business that is leaving and strife — and it’s on both sides — you leave it the way it is,” Trump said Thursday. “There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate, there has been so little trouble.”
Jenner, indeed, appears to agree with Trump’s claims that there have been few incidents involving individuals using public facilities in the states that have passed bathroom privacy laws.
“It’s important to know that in the 18 states (and more than 200 cities) that have laws and ordinances protecting transgender people from discrimination, there have been no increases in public safety incidents,” Jenner wrote. “None. Why? Because there are laws in every state which make it illegal for anyone to enter a restroom to harm or harass people, or invade their privacy. Police use those laws to arrest perpetrators and keep people safe. Protecting LGBT people from discrimination doesn’t change that!”
Jenner’s blog concluded:
Updating our laws to protect people from discrimination – and preventing laws that harm LGBT people – is important to me. We’ll keep talking about these bills here, and alerting you when there’s something you can do to help. How you’re treated shouldn’t depend on geography – our country is better than that.
Laws like the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act in North Carolina and the “religious freedom” law (HB 1523) in Mississippi have resulted in several entertainers cancelling concerts and other performances in protest.
Meanwhile, public support for so-called transgender bathrooms is plummeting.
As Breitbart News has reported, a recent Reuters poll shows support for mixed-sex bathrooms tanked 8 points from 46 percent on April 13 to 38 percent on April 19.
