Watch: Jonah Hill and Miles Teller Star as Pothead Gun Runners in ‘War Dogs’

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the comedy drama War Dogs, which stars Jonah Hill and Miles Teller as a pair of twenty-something stoners who “make money off of war without ever stepping foot on the battlefield.”

Director Todd Philips (The Hangover trilogy, Due Date) casts Hill and Teller in War Dogs as Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz, who win a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan.

The comedy was written by Phillips, Stephen Chin, and Jason Smilovic, and is based on New York Times bestselling author Guy Lawson’s book Arms and the Dudes, which tells how “three stoners from Miami Beach became the most unlikely gunrunners in history.”

According to Deadline, Diveroli and Packouz were supposed to sell arms to the Afghan National Army and police but illegally acquired their ammo from Chinese manufacturers. Their contract was suspended, and Diveroli later spent four years in prison on fraud charges.

The book, according to Amazon:

In January of 2007, three young stoners from Miami Beach won a $300 million Department of Defense contract to supply ammunition to the Afghanistan military. Incredibly, instead of fulfilling the order with high-quality arms, Efraim Diveroli, David Packouz, and Alex Podrizki—the dudes—bought cheap Communist-style surplus ammunition from Balkan gunrunners. The dudes then secretly repackaged millions of rounds of shoddy Chinese ammunition and shipped it to Kabul—until they were caught by Pentagon investigators and the scandal turned up on the front page of The New York Times.

The R-rated film will debut on Aug. 19.
