A new film by Robert Greenwald is being given to churches, politicians, and black community leaders so they can show it to their congregants, constituents, and followers to stir opposition against the NRA.
The name of the film is “Making a Killing” and Greenwald says he and his team are using it to go directly at “Money, [the] NRA, [and] Gun Companies.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, “‘Making a Killing’ is a weave of statistics and personal stories, including the death of a promising gospel singer shot on the streets of Chicago. The documentary notes that one person in the U.S. is killed with a gun every 16 minutes and that 92% of Americans favor background checks on all gun buyers.”
To accomplish these goals, the film avoids the Second Amendment–it “does not dwell on the constitutional amendment on the right to bear arms, in effect brushing aside the ideological debate to focus on the wealth of gun manufacturers and the deadly consequences of firearms.” And the film can do this because there is no attempt strike a balance between opposing sides. In fact, Greenwald said, “If I hear another director say [their movie] is a balanced portrayal allowing both sides to speak on the gun issue, I’m going to jump up and scream. We’ve heard that point of view for years and the bodies keep piling up. It’s not an equal situation. We need people to understand there is a danger because of money and greed.”
Greenwald’s film “calls for tougher background checks, restrictions on interstate trade and longer waiting periods for gun buyers.”
Longer waiting periods for gun buyers have proven to be killing periods for women who are under duress. The example of Carol Bowne is a strong case in point. She applied for permission to have a gun for self-defense in New Jersey on April 21, 2015. While awaiting that permission, an unarmed Bowne was stabbed to death in her own driveway by an ex-boyfriend against whom she had an restraining order.
