Colonia stars Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl as a young couple who are trapped in a remote cult following a violent political coup in 1970s Chile.
In the film, Watson plays Lena, a young woman who is desperate to find her missing boyfriend (Brühl) amid the turmoil. Lena then finds herself trapped by a cult that operates under the guise as a charitable mission run by a man named Paul Schäfer (Michael Nyqvist).
Entertainment Weekly notes Lena works in the garden, lies about her relationship, and endures physical abuse, all in the name of God, to be with the man she loves.
Schäfer tells Lena in the film’s second trailer, “Once you join us, you must remain.”
The film was helmed by Oscar-winning director Florian Gallenberger and first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September.
In its TIFF review, The Hollywood Reporter concluded that, despite issues regarding the film’s plot and dialogue, both Watson and Brühl “do what they can.”
Colonia will debut in select theaters in the U.S. and on VOD on April 15.
