Ynetnews reports: The Israeli film “Sand Storm”, directed by Elite Zexer, won the Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Grand Jury Prize on Sunday.
The film, which deals with the plight of Bedouin women fighting against a conservative society, was the Israeli director’s debut feature film.
This is a rare achievement for Israeli film at the reputed film festival at which the likes of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers were discovered.
Zexer defeated 11 other films from around the world in the category. It was the second time that an Israeli narrative film won this prize, after Dror Shaul’s “Sweet Mud” in 2007. In 2012, the Israeli film “The Law in These Parts” won the top prize for World Documentary.
