Whoopi Goldberg declared to The View audience on Tuesday that she is proud to call herself an American and doesn’t need or want to use the phrase African-American.
“You know what uh-uh! This is my country,” Goldberg said during a debate about U.S. immigration policy. “My mother, my grandmother, my great-grand folks, we busted ass to be here. I’m an American. I’m not an African-American. I’m not a chick-American. I’m an American!”
Goldberg’s rant come after another The View co-host cracked a joke about needing to seek asylum abroad if Donald Trump wins the presidency in 2016.
The View co-host Raven-Symoné said similar statements during an interview with Oprah in 2014. Raven-Symons agreed with Goldberg, saying, “I’m an American! I’ve been here too long to not just hold American.”
