Quentin Tarantino joined Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show Wednesday morning for a good old-fashioned venting session, where the director complained that Disney and its hot new Star Wars film muscled his Hateful Eight out of Los Angeles’ Cinerama Dome theater.
“I was trying to decide, ‘Was I going to talk about this, or was I not going to talk about this,'” Tarantino led off to Stern. “I am going to talk about it.”
According to Tarantino, The Hateful Eight was scheduled to play at the Cinerama Dome beginning December 25th. But the director complained that Disney suits forced the Dome to continue showing Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the Dome through Christmas for an extended holiday run. Tarantino claims that Disney threatened to pull Star Wars from all ArcLight locations in the country if the Dome (owned by ArcLight) didn’t comply with its request.
“They’re going out of their way to f*** me,” Tarantino told Stern.
The director clarified that he held no ill will toward Star Wars director J.J. Abrams or any of the film’s crew, but rather directed his vitriol toward top Disney brass. Tarantino urged Stern’s listeners to call up Disney and “ask them about their extortionist practices.”
Stern stuck up for Tarantino, appealing directly to Disney head honcho Bob Iger, who he says is a regular listener of the show, to straighten out the situation.
“He just wants to show his goddamn movie there,” Stern said. “You’re sitting on top of the world. You’ve got Star Wars. What, do you need this?”
The Hateful Eight is in select theaters (minus the Cinerama Dome, apparently) beginning December 25 for a 70mm “roadshow” presentation before opening wide on New Year’s Day.
