Left-wing comedian and actress Margaret Cho is developing a series for Amazon Studios in which she plays a recovering addict whose family runs a marijuana dispensary, TheWrap reports.
The hour-long comedy-drama Highland will star the Korean-American liberal activist, whose character is fresh out of court-ordered rehab, when she is forced to move in with her pot-dealing kinsfolk.
Highland is a co-production between Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between ITV Studios and Marty Adelstein, and Amazon Studios. TheWrap reports the show would be set for Amazon Prime.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cho’s potential series joins other weed-themed comedies, which are currently under production.
HBO recently ordered six episodes of High Maintenance and NBC is teaming with former Parks and Recreation star Adam Scott to develop marijuana dispensary show Buds.
Lost writer Liz Sarnoff will write and produce for the series.
Cho previously starred in the 1994 ABC sitcom All-American Girl; however, that show was cancelled after just one season. The Lifetime show Drop Dead Diva, which co-starred Cho, was cancelled in 2014 after a rocky six-season run.
While away from television, Cho has been active advocating for abortion, LGBT, and other social causes.
She unloaded on Saturday Night Live in October, after the show had announced GOP frontrunner Donald Trump would host an episode of the show.
She told TheWrap, “Why has there never been an Asian American host, cast member or musical guest on ‘SNL’ in 41 years? Forty-one years,” Cho went on to describe Trump as “racist” and “sexist.”
In September, she defended Planned Parenthood amid allegations the controversial organization was selling fetal tissue.
“I do not believe in a God who would consider abortion a sin,” she wrote on Twitter. “God created abortion. As he did all of us. God created choice for all to DECIDE.”
She also argued that unborn children are not human.
“It’s not a child – it’s a bunch of cells. And the definition of ‘child’ is not yours to decide. It’s the woman’s,” she wrote in another tweet.
