With the year drawing to a close, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama revealed their favorite songs, movies, TV shows, and moments from 2015 in an interview with People magazine.
The president picked Ridley Scott’s The Martian starring Matt Damon as his favorite movie of the year.
Damon has had a on-again-off-again relationship with Obama, having campaigned for him in 2008, but then declaring in 2013 that Obama “broke up with” him over the issue of drone-strikes. However, last October, Damon told The Hollywood Reporter that he and Obama “talked about” their split and the actor was again offering exuberant praise for the president.
Michelle told the publication her favorite movie was Amy Poehler’s animated Pixar hit Inside Out.
The president said his favorite TV show was Cinemax’s The Knick, but both he and Michelle also admitted to being fans of the ABC sitcom Black-ish.
Obama’s favorite song from 2015 was rapper Kendrick Lamar’s “How Much a Dollar Cost,” from the album To Pimp a Butterfly.
Michelle, meanwhile, still can’t get enough of the Bruno Mars hit “Uptown Funk,” which she danced to earlier this year on The Ellen DeGeneres Show:
The president and First Lady also shared some of their favorite moments of the year.
Reminiscing about his appearance on an Alaska-themed episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls in September, in which he ate a piece of salmon that had already been partially consumed by a bear, Obama said: “The landscape was breathtaking, and so were the very real effects of climate change, which become hard to ignore when the ice is melting into your hands.”
“I thought it was important to talk about protecting the only planet we have, but I never thought I’d be Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” he added.
While the president fondly recalled trekking through the Alaskan wilderness with Grylls, he also looked back on celebrating the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision to allow same-sex marriage under the 14th amendment.
“The gathering outside the White House following the Supreme Court ruling upholding the right of same sex couples to marry,” he said of the ruling. “Never thought I’d do that.”
Michelle told People she enjoyed “spending time with young people” over the year.
