Chris Brown on Black Fathers: ‘We Don’t Accept Our Responsibility’

In a wide-ranging interview, the often-controversial singer Chris Brown talked about how he refused to be a part of “that statistic” of black man who are not fathers to their children.

“I think a lot of times people, or even young black men, we don’t accept our responsibility because we’re too scared, because we’re too young, whatever it is,” he said in an interview with Hot 97.

In September, a California court granted Chris Brown joint custody of his 16-month-old daughter and ordered the Grammy winning artist to pay $2,500 a month in child support.

“Some men my age run from their responsibility as fathers. I embrace mine. Just sucks that some females use children as meal ticket,” Brown tweeted during his custody battle.

Brown’s daughter’s name is Royalty, which is also the name of his next studio album.

Being a father to your children “shows more character, shows your growth as a man,” Brown said.

Nearly 70 percent of black or African-American households are fatherless, according to Census data.
