An actor in an Old West gunfight reenactment was shot in the groin and a female bystander was injured after live rounds were used in a performance instead of blanks.

Actors Tom Carter and Ken Curtis, part of the Tombstone Vigilantes performance troupe, were recreating a classic gunfight in the historic town of Tombstone, Arizona on Sunday when Curtis was shot in the upper groin, reports CBS News. He was immediately taken to a local hospital to undergo surgery to have the bullet removed.

According to local CBS affiliate KOLD-TV, Carter arrived late and his gun was not properly inspected before the performance. Marshals reportedly searched his six-shooter and found one live round and five expended casings in the cylinder.

A woman was reportedly hit with shrapnel but refused medical treatment on scene. At least two of the bullets hit nearby businesses.

Tombstone Vigilantes head Jeff Miller told the Daily Mail that the group has safety precautions in place for every show, but “obviously there was a flaw.”

“I have no idea how it happened and I’m hoping the marshal can get to the bottom of it,” Miller told the outlet.

Meanwhile, the Marshal’s Office has advised the troupe not to stage any more reenactments before safety precautions can be beefed up.

“Tombstone takes pride in the safety and security of its townspeople and tourists alike and the citizens of Tombstone can be assured that stringent safety protocol will be enforced prior to allowing any further gunfight skits,” the Marshal’s Office said in a statement.

Tombstone was made famous for the “Gunfight at the OK Corral” between the legendary outlaw Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp.
