The second trailer for Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant arrived online this week, giving fans an extended look at Leonardo DiCaprio as 19th century frontiersman Hugh Glass.
In the new trailer, Glass is graphically mauled by a bear, double-crossed by his own men, and ultimately buried alive before setting off on a mission of revenge.
The new trailer also showcases some of the technical prowess Inarritu displayed in last year’s Birdman, which took home Best Picture at last year’s Academy Awards in addition to netting the Mexican-born auteur his first Best Director statue. As he did with Birdman, Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity, The Tree of Life) returns to lens The Revenant.
Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson and Lukas Haas co-star. Inarritu penned the screenplay off of Michael Punke’s true story-based book The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge.
Check out the extended new trailer above. The Revenant hits select theaters December 25 before opening wide on January 8.
