Polish horror director Marcin Wrona was found dead in a hotel room in his native country on Friday night, a week after his new film Demon made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, reports Variety.
Jim Dobson, Wrona’s friend and publicist, informed the industry publication the director was in Poland preparing for the October premiere of the film, when he died suddenly.
“We are all deeply shocked and saddened at the news of the sudden death of Marcin Wrona,” the Toronto Film Festival said in a statement released to Variety. “His film ‘Demon’ truly marked the emergence of a strong new voice on the world cinema stage. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family, especially his wife and producing partner, Olga Szymanska, who was with him at the premiere in Toronto.”
Tiff announced plans to pay tribute to Wrona by showing Demon for a final time on Saturday at 9:15 p.m. at Scotiabank Theatre.
Wrona was set to debut Demon at the upcoming Fantastic Fest horror event in Austin, TX later this month and the upcoming Sitges Film Festival in Spain.
Wrona was born in Tarnów, Poland and studied film at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He directed a number of features for TV, as well as the theatrical features My Flesh, My Blood and The Christening.
The 42-year-old director had recently married Olga Szymanska, who worked as a producer on the film. Polish government officials are currently investigating the cause of his death.
