Actor Johnny Depp began his own private investigation into an assistant director he worked with on a film when he suspected the man to be a voyeur who spied on actresses using hidden cameras.

Kevin Thomas Roy, an assistant director who worked on more than 50 films including Terminator 3, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Pirates of the Caribbean, pleaded no contest to two counts of misdemeanor invasion of privacy earlier this year for secretly filming two actresses while they changed in a dressing room on the set of a car commercial in Los Angeles.

However, according to an L.A. County District Attorney’s search warrant obtained by Jezebel last month, Roy was accused of filming unsuspecting women in at least five states. The warrant further alleges that Roy had a hard drive containing 40 videos and more than 400 photographs of women taken by hidden cameras stashed in dressing rooms, bathrooms, and even his own home.

As assistant director, Roy was reportedly responsible for setting up “base camp” on film sets, including setting up trailers, bathrooms, and changing rooms for cast and crew.

In 2010, Roy was working on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with Depp when the actor became suspicious of the man’s behavior, according to the Daily Mail. Depp reportedly had his security team run a criminal background check on Roy, but the search failed to turn anything up and the assistant director was allowed to continue working on the film.

Roy was reportedly caught after his then-newlywed wife found the hard drive containing the videos and photographs and turned them over to investigators. Roy and his wife have since divorced.

The assistant director originally pleaded not guilty to invasion of privacy charges in May of this year, but eventually switched his plea to no contest. He received three years of probation and was ordered to attend a one-year sex offender rehabilitation program, but was not required to register as a sex offender.

Roy worked with a long list of Hollywood actresses, including Scarlett Johansson, Amber Heard, Olivia Munn, and Olga Kurylenko. He worked alongside Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench on the fourth Pirates movie, which was released in 2011.

One woman who was informed by Roy’s ex-wife that she was secretly filmed, identified only as Cindy, told Jezebel last month that no one from the L.A. County DA’s office contacted her about pursuing a case.

“I have spoken with other women who were filmed by [Roy] and they weren’t contacted either,” Cindy told the outlet. “I don’t think it’s fair that other women were victimized and have not been told about it. Famous women and regular working women were all equally victimized by him.”

Earlier this month, Jezebel reported that Roy had been fired from the set of the upcoming film Allegiant, which stars Shailene Woodley.
