One man’s emotionally fraught journey to meet Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich is the subject of next month’s documentary Mission to Lars.
Mission follows Tom Spicer, who has a form of autism called Fragile X Syndrome, as he attempts to meet his idol Ulrich.
His siblings “promise to make it happen, with hopes of good times and bonding on the road trip,” according to the synopsis of the documentary. “But Tom’s disabilities, a dysfunctional family, and heavy metal’s labyrinthine backstage world thwart the mission at every turn.”
Ulrich has weighed in on the film, telling NME he found it “deeply moving.”
“It’s not something we’re directly involved in, it’s their film, their journey, but we’re supportive of their endeavor,” he said. “We don’t want to take it over and have it turn into some kind of vanity project. It’s a great testament into a world I didn’t know much about, and a great testament to the importance of music and what it means to different people.”
The film was released on DVD in 2013. But Loudwire reports that North American audiences will get a chance to see it in select theaters and on-demand on September 25.
