Video game convention QuakeCon was held in Dallas, Texas, from Thursday, July 23 to Sunday, July 26. Previews of role-playing game Fallout 4 and first-person shooter Doom were featured alongside other festivities.
Developer Bethesda Softworks revealed new details on Fallout 4. The player’s canine companion, named Dog Meat, is actually modeled after the dog of Fallout 4’s lead designer. Bethesda filmed various actions of the real-life dog to most accurately depict the in-game one. Gamers can also send Dog Meat to hunt for loot in the game.
In addition to Dog Meat, Bethesda unveiled other companions like the splendid liar Piper and the robot aid Mr. Handy. Gamers can have romantic relationships with all of the human companions but not with non-human party members. Fallout 4 will be released on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One.
Meanwhile, id Software’s Marty Stratton, Doom’s executive producer, announced, “We’ve always been at the forefront of saying we want our games to run as fast as possible at the highest resolution possible. So for us, that goal is 1080p and 60 FPS. Along with that goal, the mantra of our technology team is that we want to be the best-looking game out there at 60 FPS and 1080p. So you draw that line in the sand.”
Stratton justified the team’s graphical goal with factors other than sheer visual appeal. “For us it isn’t just a lofty technical goal. We really do think it’s important to the feel of the game, it’s important to the way our combat feels and our movement feels,” he explained. “It’s got to be fast, it’s got to be fluid, and it’s all based on that. It really is a gameplay goal first and foremost. You do make decisions here or there. Ultimately I don’t think you can ever expect most consumers to really nitpick.” Doom is expected to debut in 2016.
The Imperial City DLC for Elder Scrolls Online was also given a release date of Monday, August 31.
QuakeCon held a multiplayer Triathlon Tournament. Winning teams got $32,000 and the Grand Master Champion got an additional $8,000. The convention also hosted a Bawls Guarana energy drink chugging contest.
