A California water district has filed suit against Tom Selleck for water theft, alleging the actor repeatedly filled a commercial tanker with water from a public hydrant and used it at his personal property.
The Calleguas Municipal Water District filed suit on Monday against Selleck and his wife Jillie Selleck in Ventura County Superior Court, according to Courthouse News Service.
The water district claims Selleck used a fire hydrant in Thousand Oaks to fill up a commercial water tanker seven times in 2013 and transported the water to “the Hidden Valley area” where he owns a 60-acre ranch. The suit further claims that Selleck ignored two separate cease-and-desist letters sent to both his residences in Thousand Oaks and Los Angeles, with the same tanker truck making pickups from the same hydrant over four days in late March this year.
In its suit, Calleguas claims it paid a private investigator $21,685.55 to investigate the water theft.
The district is suing to reclaim the fee it paid to the private investigator, plus attorney’s fees, an injunction, and unspecified damages.
With the fourth year of a record drought choking California, state water agencies are under pressure to cut water use to comply with Gov. Jerry Brown’s order for a 25 percent statewide reduction.
Selleck is best known for his starring role in the 80s television series Magnum, P.I. He currently stars on CBS’ Blue Bloods.
