Rapper Earl Simmons, better known by his stage name DMX, was arrested in New York City Friday evening for nonpayment of child support.
The 44-year-old rapper, who has fathered 12 children, was waiting to take the stage at Radio City Music Hall just moments before his arrest, and several of his fans took to Twitter to vent their frustrations.
“They just locked up dmx outside radio city didnt even let him perform,” said one fan. “It wasn’t enough that NYPD ruined the Hawks they had to go and lock up DMX right outside the concert where everybody paid to see him,” said another.
According to the Wall Street Journal, DMX filed for bankruptcy in a Manhattan court in July 2013 hoping to reorganize some of his debts, including the $1.2 million he owes in child support.
DMX reported in his filing that he had around $50,000 in assets, and somewhere between $1 million and $10 million worth of debt.
The judge dismissed his case and prohibited the rapper from filing for bankruptcy for another 18 months, which has also prevented him from obtaining a passport for overseas performances.
“Despite any obstacle we might face, the team will continue to move forward with DMX’s national performances and we are still working relentlessly to add obtaining his passport,” a rep for the artist said in 2013.
Since becoming a public figure, DMX has been arrested multiple times for offenses such as animal cruelty, reckless driving, drug possession, and identity falsification.
A source told The New York Post that DMX’s staff turned to well-known bail bondsman Ira Judelson after his arrest Friday.
